Brooke M Davis Transforms Walnut Wood into a Softly Tufted Side Table

The inspiration for the Pilo Table came from observing other attempts to replicate the look of tufted fabric in wood. Dissatisfied with the hard and uniform results of these attempts, Davis set out to create a softer texture and find a unique way to wrap it around a box. The process involved modeling the design in automotive clay before transferring it to CAD. The model was then used to review surfacing before being applied to the final walnut wood.

The Pilo Table's unique properties lie in its inviting texture and opulent design. The table invites touch with its soft tufted walnut wood, pinned with Swarovski Crystal accents. The design exudes luxury, from the concept through to the hand-rubbed finish. The table measures 24.5" x 16" x 24.5", a perfect size for a side table in any luxury living home décor.

The Pilo Table is crafted using CNC milling, followed by meticulous hand sanding to achieve perfection. The table can be left as an interactive decorative piece for users to touch and feel, or a glass top can be added to protect the surface and provide a flat surface for setting objects on.

The project, which took place in Austin, Texas from 2016 to 2018, involved multiple iterations in both clay and MDF to develop the correct texture surface pattern. The biggest challenge was creating the correct soft feel CAD geometry and combining that surface texture with traditional joinery techniques in furniture design, such as the spline miter joint.

The Pilo Table was awarded Silver in A' Furniture Design Award in 2019. The Silver A' Design Award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
